The Altra Experience Flow 2 is an update to the previous AltraFWD Experience. The shoe maintains Altra’s commitment to a natural, foot-shaped shoe with a roomy toe box, but it does depart from their standard zero drop. The Experience Flow and other shoes in this line have a 4-mm drop, which in my eyes allows more individuals to be introduced to Altra’s line of shoes without the fear of moving to a zero-drop shoe. The Flow offers a responsive running shoe that can excel as a lightweight daily trainer with the ability to pick up the pace when needed. It also has the versatility to serve as an excellent walking shoe for those attracted to the Altra shoe shape.

Upper and Fit
The upper of the Flow is comprised of a breathable sandwich mesh that provides excellent overall comfort. It introduces a new elf-like heel found on many other brands of current road shoes that provides a secure fit. The tongue is extremely padded and wraps the top of the foot well. For those who may be reluctant to try Altra because of the natural foot shape, I can share that I have a very narrow foot and have no problems with sliding or slipping in the Flow.
Midsole and Ride
The Flow marks the introduction of a new EGO P35 midsole compound. I will admit that I do not have extensive previous experience running in Altra road shoes, but this midsole reminds me of many of the cutting-edge compounds found in other brands. The midsole has excellent step-in comfort. Once you start to run, it provides the bounce and responsiveness needed to easily soak up the miles while urging you to go faster.

Outsole and Durability
The rubber outsole of the Flow offers excellent grip. I have not had any issues running in a variety of conditions, including rain and slippery leaves. It is holding up well and is not showing any unusual wear. I would expect the outsole to have no problem lasting the normal 300–500-mile range common for most running shoes.

The Experience Flow 2 is a departure in many ways for Altra with the introduction of a 4-mm drop and an exciting, new midsole. I, for one, am excited by these changes and look forward to seeing the future innovations from Altra in the Experience line. The Flow is a light and responsive daily trainer that can fit nicely in any shoe rotation. My only caveat is, I would not take the Flow for runs longer than ten miles. Good news is that Altra just released the FWD Via 2, which serves as the excellent partner to the Flow. It has the same EGO P35 midsole but more of it and is made to soak up the miles of those longer efforts. The Flow would also be a comfortable walking shoe for those attracted to Altra’s natural shaped shoes.
