Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 Review

Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 Review

The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 is back, and it's looking to build on what made the last versions so popular with runners. Known for being lightweight, fast, and super fun to run in, the Speed series has always struck a great balance between training and race-day performance. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at what’s new in version 4 and how it feels out on the run.

Matt: I must start this review with a confession. Since the Endorphin Speed was introduced five years ago, it has been a regular in my rotation and maybe my all-time favorite shoe. It fits my foot great, is extremely versatile, and is the one shoe I would keep if I had to give up all others in my rotation. With that aside, I hope to provide you with the reasons why I love this shoe and how it may also fit well into your shoe rotation.

Emily: The Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 was a welcome surprise. I already loved the Endorphin Speed 3, but the Speed 4 took things up a notch. It feels even more energetic and versatile — a true do-it-all daily trainer. Whether I’m heading out for a tempo run or logging easy miles, this shoe delivers a smooth, fun ride every time. It’s become one of my most reached-for pairs, effortlessly handling a variety of workouts while keeping the miles enjoyable.

Upper and Fit

Matt: Upon step-in, the engineered mesh upper of the Speed 4 feels accommodating and comfortable. It fits my narrow foot well and did not result in any hot spots or irritations on any of my runs. This upper also can easily work for a wide variety of foot types without issue. Even though the name suggests this shoe as a speed option, the upper does have the feel of a more traditional trainer. While not overly plush, it has that right combination of being breathable while also providing the expected comfort of a daily shoe. This upper just feels great when I am running!

Emily: The first thing I noticed when stepping into the Endorphin Speed 4 was that it felt a bit firmer than the previous version — but in a good way. The fit was perfect for my foot, though those with wider feet might find it a bit snug. Initially, it felt like a typical daily trainer, but once I started running, that’s when the magic kicked in. The upper is breathable, secure, and extremely comfortable, contributing to an all-around great ride.

Midsole and Ride

Matt: The midsole of the Speed 4 is composed of PWRRUN PB foam used in combination with a winged nylon plate. This foam and plate work together to offer the perfect combination of cushioning and energy return. Also present is Saucony’s SPEEDROLL technology, which provides effortless forward motion for an easy and smooth turnover. If you are just out doing some daily miles, the cushioning offers protection to handle the longest of runs. If you want to pick up the pace, the plate and SPEEDROLL respond to accommodate any quicker effort. This is why this shoe is truly special -- it has that rare versatility to handle any type of run.

Emily: As Matt already mentioned, the cushioning and energy return in this shoe is superb. You definitely cannot feel the plate, but you notice the bounce it offers with each step. I would have to agree with Matt, that this shoe truly is a do-it-all shoe. It can handle just about any pace you decide to throw at it.

Outsole and Durability

Matt: This outsole of the Speed 4 is composed of XT-900 rubber arranged in a lattice design that offers excellent traction and durability. I have run in this shoe in all weather conditions -- including snow and rain, and have not experienced any slipping. It provides excellent grip on the road and has even performed well on crushed limestone and gravel paths. The outsole has normal wear over the hundreds of miles I have put on this shoe and demonstrates quite good durability.

Emily: The outsole on this shoe has been fantastic for me. I haven’t experienced any issues with grip, even in wet conditions — it’s handled well across a range of weather and surfaces. While I wouldn’t take it on trails, it performs reliably on roads and light paths. I’ve logged over 300 miles on my current pair, and there’s minimal wear so far. I’m confident these will easily carry me through to 500 miles.

Conclusion

Matt: In summary, I cannot recommend the Saucony Endorphin Speed 4 enough for those looking for a versatile shoe that can handle almost every type of run. It can handle regular daily miles with ease and responds well when you want to pick up the pace. It is not that max-cushioned cruiser built for easy recovery miles, but it can do just about everything else. I would even argue that it is a great budget-priced, race-day shoe for those not wanting to invest in carbon-plated super shoes. At $170, it offers almost everything you could want in a race option at around $100 less than the super shoes. Yes, I am biased. It is my favorite shoe, but you should come give it a try. It may become your favorite as well!

Emily: All in all, this is a lively, responsive daily trainer that’s capable of handling just about anything you throw at it. While it may not be my absolute favorite, it’s a strong contender and a great addition to any running shoe rotation. As Matt pointed out, if you’re not looking to spend big on a race-day shoe, this is an excellent alternative that delivers impressive performance without the premium price tag.
